Alaska
Approximately 60,000 years ago Ice Age nomads,
Siberian hunters, first observed the scenic splendor of our
country's largest state. Now you have that rare opportunity
to share in that splendor since Alaska is comprised of 365 million
acres giving you limitless opportunities to relocate wherever
you so wish.
Does climbing the largest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley,
appeal to you? If you enjoy hiking or backpacking then the day
hike, or a mountain bike excursion, is in your future. Even
a month-long adventure scaling the summit of Mount McKinley
awaits giving you a truly lifetime memorable experience. If
you relocate near Anchorage in the southcentral region of Alaska,
then four mountain ranges are within driving distance. Entertain
going for a day in the mountains of Chugach State Park where
you can camp, hike, fish, mountain bike, river kayak or water
raft as well as backpack.
In the west explore the untamed majesty of the Aleutians neighboring
with puffins and sea otters. The 4 million acres of Lake Clark
National Park and Preserve introduce you to wild rivers, granite
mountain peaks, and primitive glaciers that will astonish you.
While in the north pan for gold, discover the vast natural coastline
by kayak while watching brown bears seek fish along the beaches,
and explore the unparalleled Alaskan rain forest. When was the
last time you ventured north of the Artic Circle? You may cross
it when driving the Dalton Highway to the very tip of Alaska.
With over 3 million lakes and 3,000 river and streams, engage
in flyfishing, freshwater fishing, salt water fishing and even
ice fishing providing sportsmen with a unique adventure to reel
in any of the more than 600 species of fish teeming the Alaskan
waters. Picture a night where you the angler cook over your
very own campfire, gaze at the northern skies, share the unspoiled
wilderness, and inhale pure unpolluted air.
Ceremonies and festivals abound for those so inclined. Such
festivals involve dancing and singing, feasting, wearing of
clan regalia, and sometimes a gift exchange. Various Native
cultures wear jewelry or tattoos, ornamental robes or tunics,
and elaborate headdresses or masks. One example is the Inupiat's
Messenger Feast where tribal members exchange gifts, trade for
implements, materials, or for food. The tribes alternate holding
this annual fete which is held in the early winter.
The port city of Anchorage offers residents and visitors a variety
of museums, a diversity of ethnic eateries and a performing-arts
center. Juneau, a charming frontier town offers the Alaska State
Museum as well as other attractions such as the oldest original
Russian church built in 1894.
