Florida
The Sunshine State boasts a
universal appeal and it is not undeserved either. With the country's
longest continous coastline, it possesses beaches, such as Miami's
South Beach and Panama City's fine sand beach, which are ranked
among the world's top ten.
For the historically oriented resident, the Spanish-flavored city
of St. Augustine on the Atlantic northeast is the oldest settlement
in North America. Also, the St. Johns River of Jacksonville is
host to numerous museums, concert halls, and other cultural attractions.
Farther down the Atlantic coast is Daytona Beach whose Chamber
of Commerce refers to it as the "WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS BEACH", in
part because of annual spring NASCAR Winston Cup Daytona 500 Race.
Famed Cape Kennedy at Titusville provides opportunities to revisit
historically significant United States space explorations.
Surfing at Cocoa Beach is popular with many, but do not ignore
the the Gold Coast's unique opportunites at Sebastian, Vero Beach,
Ft. Pierce, Jensen Beach, the various Palm Beaches. These resort
enclaves provide shopping, fine arts, and related cultural attractions.
Natural habitats act as sanctuaries for local fauna (pelicans,
manitees, etc.) available for all to see. On to Ft. Lauderdale,
famed for its nightlife and beach crowd. Just south of Ft. Lauderdale
is fabled Miami with one of the most pristine beaches known. In
particular, retro South Beach is gay friendly, sporting nightlife
second to none.
