Hawaii
The Big Island is the largest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Hilo and Kailua-Kona are the 2 main cities with Kona being a major tourist destination. In addition to tourism, agriculture and ranching play a significant role in our economy. Those who value a more rural or secluded life style have many choices here.
Due to the large mountains we have a variety of climates. The windward areas (Hilo or east side) are mostly tropical rain forest or cloud forest. Most of the rain falls in the morning, late afternoon, or at night. But like anywhere else, we can have rainy days or hot sunny days.
The leeward areas (Kona and Kohala) is typically hot and sunny with a tropical semi-arid climate.
The best beaches and many nice hotels and condos are found on the Kona side. Higher elevations are cooler on either side of the island. Minimum winter nighttime temperture in Hilo is around 60F. Typical summer days in Hilo are in the low to mid 80s. Summer days in Kona are often around 90F. I find the climate to be very comfortable.
Due to our moderate climate, you can grow most tropical and subtropical plants. The local nursery industry produces orchids, anthuriums, palms, plumeria, Heliconia, gingers, vireyas and many other ornamentals. There is a growing tropical fruit industry which produces lychee, rambutan, durian, mango, mangosteen, avocado, banana, cacao, citrus and many others. Hawaiian grown coffee is world famous and we have an emerging tea industry. This is a great gay and lesbian friendly island.
