Detroit, historically labeled the "Motor City"
in the last century and known for its "Motown Sound" in the
1980's, is undergoing a miraculous urban revival in the current
decade. Areas along famed Woodward and Livernois are building
numerous oppulent accomodations for the upscale urban crowd
at an ever increasing rate. The waterfront, with its Renaissance
Center, Cobo Arena, and Hart Plaza still draw many to Downtown
Detroit for its variety of ethnic festivals throughout the summer
months. Its internationally famous Freedom Festival, in cooperation
with neighboring Windsor, Ontario, attract tens of thousands
to view its fantastic fireworks display known as pyrotechnic
extravaganza.
A plethora of gambling casinos dot the urban
area also. The new Comerica Stadium is
home to the Tigers. For hockey buffs, the World Champion Red
Wings play in the home stadium. Suburban environs such as Bloomfield
Hills, Birmingham, Farmington, the Grosse Pointes, and Troy
provide the "burbs" with unique cultural milieux. The variety
of university scenes attract world reknowned literati, theatre,
and other artistic performers. Neighboring Ann Arbor, home to
the University of Michigan, houses a host of related opportunities
enjoyed by many. In particular, its mid-July juried Art Fair
is the largest in the midwest. The fabled fair "street scene"
with bands, jugglers, and clowns serves to provide a multi-sensory
experience second to none.
